Try This Simple Mantra for Meditation

Satsang Yoga Collective | FEB 20, 2023

Using a mantra as a focal point for your meditation practice can be very helpful in stilling the mind. Coming from the roots man - meaning “mind” and tra - meaning “to free or release”, a mantra gives the mind a groove to slip into, so it can relax.

The mantra “so hum” is simple, yet packed with potency. It is often one of the first mantras learned by yoga practitioners (after Om of course!) due to its brevity. So hum translates to “I am that”. It is a way to claim your connection with all there is, an invitation to sit in your universal nature.

Two ways to practice meditation with the so hum mantra:

Follow your breath - Observe your breath at your nostrils or your abdomen. Let your mind say “so” as you inhale and “hum” as you exhale. When you notice your mind wandering, bring it back to watching your breath.

Japa mala - Using a set of japa mala (prayer beads), chant the mantra once for each bead that passes between your fingers. You may chant out loud or internally.

*Take time to settle into a comfortable seat, where you won’t be disturbed by tension in the body. Minimize distractions by practicing in a warm, quiet environment.
