The Yamas and Niyamas - The Ethical Practices of Yoga

Satsang Yoga Collective | DEC 26, 2022

Greetings Satsang

Last week our newsletter and blog highlighted the 8 Limbs of Yoga as laid out by the Sage Patanjali in their famous Yoga Sutras. Many may be surprised to learn the 8 Limbs don’t start with asana (yoga poses), nor do they start with a focus on breathing or meditation. This path to Yoga (the state of ‘union’ or ‘self-realization’) starts instead with an ethical code.

The Yamas and Niyamas are 10 ethical principles that create a stable foundation for Yoga practice, and a freer life in general. The Yamas help us to be in better relationship with those around us. When we’ve got the Yamas somewhat established, the Niyamas then help us to go deeper into our own being to cultivate a better relationship with our Self.

The Yamas and Niyamas offer us a code to live by, one we get to study and establish for ourselves how we see fit. By working with the Yamas and Niyamas, we get to do a bit of “housecleaning”. We have the opportunity, through self-study, to clean up our act and decide how we want to show up in our communities, in our family, and with ourselves. When we look within, we gain the freedom of truth and choice going forward.

If you’d like to learn more about the first 2 Limbs of Yoga, join us for Into the Heart of Winter Satsang this year! We’ll be studying a beloved book on the subject (the reading is light) and meeting once a week on Sunday mornings to discuss what we’ve read.

Winter Satsang is offered in two 5-week sessions:

  • Part I - Yamas study (Jan 8 - Feb 5)
  • Part II - Niyamas study (Feb 12 - Mar 12)

*Join us for one part or both!
